No Swimming - Because

The Population of Monroe County during the Civil War was 100,000. Ten per cent of our Population fought in the war! Can you imagine ten per cent of Rochester in Iraq? Pictured above is the southwest corner of Main and Exchange Street in the 1860's. Bob Marcotte, columnist with the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, has written a fascinating account of Rochester's participation in the war. It is called, "Where They Fell: Stories of Rochester Area Soldiers in the Civil War". The coffee table sized, hard bound, cloth covered, book is 296 pages and beautifully illustrated with maps, drawings and photos and includes letters and diaries of Rochester soldiers.

Congratulations to Steve Crowley, who won a copy of this book from The Refrigerator by correctly guessing that a whopping ten percent of Rochesterians fought in that war.

Bob Marcotte may be familiar to D&C readers from his "Just Ask" column in the paper. The book is available through the Office of the City Historian for $39.95 (plus shipping or pick it up at the Office, 115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604). Call 585.428.8095 to order. (View Book)
